UNAPOLOGETIC
My Unapologetic series presents a powerful counter-narrative to the often-reductive portrayals of African Americans within our popular culture. Utilizing pattern and abstract design, my work not only subverts the sensationalist narratives abounding in popular culture regarding Black people, but also reclaims a space for restoring dignity and strength for our people.
In several of my works, the themes of fortitude and identity are explored as “invisible face masks” symbolize the duplicitous psyche of Black people. These works shed a light on the hidden struggles faced male and female individuals who must endure a world that often disrespects them. Furthermore, in other works, I utilize the motif of protective “armor” as inspired by traditional African art, ancient military armor, and contemporary superhero costumes. The armor serves as both protection against societal stereotyping and as a celebratory nod to African artistic heritage. The protective patterns evoke a sense of superhero strength, reinforcing the idea that the individuals are supported in by an inner resilience that challenges dominant narratives.
